My uncle and a cousin from downstate visited today -drove 4 hours one way just to visit us! amazing. anyway, as i shared some of the birth story, my uncle asked “what’s a doula?” and i explained some of what you’d done for me. by that time, my mom had joined us too, and she added in some things she remembered, your bag of tricks, so to speak, the massage, the way you’d take action w/out being asked, and do just the right thing. It reminded me that I’d meant to tell you, when we met today, how much your role surprised me, and meant to me, but somehow I forgot about all that and just kept asking you questions. I guess i’m like that- all business sometimes. But truly, in my job, I’ve gotten to be that person who witnesses other people’s most vulnerable moments. I can’t remember a time when roles were reversed so clearly as they were for me during Maya’s birth, with you guiding me through what weres probably the most vulnerable moments of my life. You’re incredibly good at what you do -your intuition. I’ll never forget especially when I was getting that epidural, my forehead pressed against yours, you encouraging me, steadier than a zen monk. that’s how I remember it anyway. I doubt I could’ve remained so still with out you. Intense!”

How do I even begin to express my gratitude for the strength and support you gave me throughout my pregnancy and labor and delivery.  Even during the most difficult moments, you were beside me.  You have a gift – a TRUE passion.  You know what to do for a woman when we may not even know what we want or need.  You showed true compassion, you asked all the right questions, you gave me the strength I needed to push on!  You were there through the entire journey.

You shared one of the most important and intimate moments of my life and you will always have a special spot in my heart.”
